Before shopping for the acrylic aquariums and its equipment, you should make a list first. With your experience in getting fish as pets, you would know the most common things to look for and where to purchase them. First, you must make a decision on the kind of fish tank aquarium that you should buy. Although glass aquariums are nice, acrylic aquariums will be a better choice for children. It weighs less than glass, does not chip or break and offers a good inside view of the aquarium. The disadvantage of having acrylic aquarium are-it scratches easily and costs more than the glass aquarium.

Your kids might get too overexcited on decorating the aquarium. Explain to them that bright decoration and over decoration will be stressful for the fish. Ask them of what the real home of the fish is like. The children will be guided by the suggestive question and they will decorate the fish tank aquarium appropriately.

The task of getting a fish for the fish tank will be the biggest challenge for you as a parent. By the first time you have the aquariums kids and even the adults would like to have lots of fish. Tell the kids that the water in the aquarium should be stabilized first before inserting any fish. First stabilize the water temperature and the equipments should be double checked too. To help ease the boredom, have a lesson or two about ‘waste management.’ Through this, your children will know a part of taking care of the fish and at the same time they will be ready too. Over feeding the fish is also one of the habits children would do. Tell them of the feeding time and the effects it can do to the fish if they are not given the proper amount of feeds.  

If your children are on the elementary level, then you have to explane thing very simply. Let them know of the fish- its behavior, needs and what to do with it. Do not give them cock-and-bull stories about the fish going to the bathroom when they poop. The fish will die if the aquarium isn't cleaned and the children need to understand this point. If your children are in secondary level, the nitrogen cycle will be understood already. The helpful bacteria and the bad bacteria will help them understand the cycle better.

As your kids have fish they will be taught about the value of responsibility very early. They will be more aware of the fascinating world of aquatic animals. Aside from that, your family will have more quality time together.
